Everyone is capable of learning. If your child is not learning something, we need to look at how, why, and when we are teaching it.
There is no age limit to learning. It doesn't matter if a person is 2 or 20 or 40. Everyone can learn a new skill at any time. As adults, we continually learn new behaviors to adapt to our environment.
Every child is an individual. No two children are alike no matter what diagnosis they have. Although there may be similarities between your child and someone else's child, what works for that child may not work for yours. There must be flexibility in the program to allow for every child's strengths and needs.
Things that are relevant to the child should be taught. Does anyone need to know the difference between an alligator and a crocodile? If your child doesn't use what s/he has learned, s/he will forget it. I took five years of French but can't speak more than two sentences because I haven't used it. It is the same for a child. They will remember what they use.
Assessment is an on-going process. Assessment of skills should be occurring throughout a child's program. Why would anyone spend a month, week, or even a day teaching something your child already knows?
A skill is of no use if your child can only demonstrate it at a table in a quiet room with one person. Generalization must be included at the learning stage and continued after the skill has been mastered in the one-on-one learning environment.
Reinforcement is the key to a successful program. Without effective reinforcement, your child will not learn. Noncompliance issues frequently arise when so called "reinforcers" are no longer reinforcing. Reinforcers must be evaluated and re-evaluated regularly for effectiveness.
Parents, you didn't sign up for this class. I recognize the fact that you love your child more than anything and know your child better than anyone. You have the final say in everything pertaining to your child. I am here to provide professional guidance and opinions.
